Over the last month we have been busy celebrating Mulberry Madness here at BOP. We have held a month’s worth of harvests, workshops and volunteer events to get more people acquainted with this funky fruit. In the process we were able to harvest over 80 pounds of mulberries and partner with 7 restaurants to create delicious mulberry dishes.
Early on in May when we began scouting for mulberry trees, we quickly realized just how abundant they are here in Baltimore. Everywhere we looked we found trees growing in parks and green spaces. As the fruits became ripe, we were able to connect with folks from all over Baltimore to harvest together. These harvests brought together folks to celebrate the fruit growing in our collective backyard. We met many folks who had eaten them for years and some who were excited to try them for the first time. We were all in for a treat, as 2017 ended up being our best Mulberry year on record.
After spending most of June harvesting, we hosted a mulberry restaurant week. This year, with such a huge harvest, we were able to expand our reach and offer larger quantities than ever. Restaurant week was a great success and we were able to see what creative chefs could do with our beloved fruit. We decided to end the celebration with a BOP community potluck. With the inspiration from our restaurant partners and volunteers we cooked each other mulberry pizza, cornbread, barbecue and too many other dishes to name. Through all these events we were able to build community and spread the word about mulberries.
Thank you to all of the wonderful people who helped make Mulberry Madness happen!
